Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace Road, London

The Basics

Buckingham Palace is one of England's most famous landmarks. Visitors can always view its opulent exterior through the gates, but visits must be timed right to tour the interior. During its summer opening, travelers can peek into the state rooms, see the Throne Room, stroll through the palace gardens, and admire masterpieces by artists such as Rembrandt and Canaletto in Queen Victoria's Picture Gallery.

Trip to the Queen's residences was excellent
We had a great local guide - Cliff! He took great care of us from the moment we boarded our coach for Windsor. We left around 8 am for the drive, and returned to London in the early afternoon where we skipped the lines and toured Buckingham Palace. Highly recommend you use a guided tour - it's worth the fast entry, especially during the busy tourist season in London.

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Day Trip from London
Loved the tour, I didn’t realise the amount of people who would be at Windsor and out guide and driver got us there nice and early so we could take full advantage of the morning. I’m glad we only booked the Windsor and buckingham palace, anything else would have been too much for 1 day.

Such a quaint town and a beautiful castle! I can see why the queen thinks of it as her Home. Much more of personal feel than Buckingham Palace. And the grounds are gorgeous!Loved it a lot more than Buckingham palace..

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Day Trip from London
Our tour guide was excellent. The only downside was the initial group boarding process with all the tours departing from the same area at Victoria Station at the same time. Also please have the tour guide mention to people touring Buckingham Palace that there are no restroom facilities until the very end of the tour.

James, our tour guide made the bus trip to Windsor worthwhile, otherwise slightly boring, Buckingham Palace was an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Day Trip from London
The guide was sooo funny. We had time to see both places, though when you put these two big attractions together, you may not do either one of the full justice, but it worked out ok with the time, just enough..

Buckingham Palace and Vintage Bus Tour of London
A royal day. Changing of the guard was so dramatic. The state rooms just stunning and the river cruise so scenic. Enjoyed the Buckingham cafe for tea and dessert and picked up a darling welsh corgi keyring.

Buckingham Palace and Vintage Bus Tour of London
Totally enjoyed our bus tour on Sunday morning. We were able to see so much of London, in a short period of time. The driver was super spectacular, especially when you consider he had to avoid the bike London. We made it on time to the changing of the guards. Most tour groups missed it ,being stuck in traffic. Our guide had the perfect combination of knowledge and humor. We totally enjoyed!!!!

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Day Trip from London
Nice to have free time in windsor to see the castle and town at our own pace. Nice to get the tickets to go inside without having to queue up at Buckingham Palace. After being dropped off at Buckingham palace we asked to wait for someone but we were not sure who the person was nor we had any documentation any longer (the 1st tour guide asked for the documentation) to prove we were on the tour.

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Day Trip from London
Great tour, although we could have used more time at Windsor...so much to see and so little time. With the tour ending at Buckingham Palace, we had lots of time to browse. All in all, great value.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Buckingham Palace is during the legendary Changing of the Guard ceremony, when the royal guards change shifts. This takes place daily at 11:30am but can be canceled in bad weather. The palace interior is only open to the public during summer, from late July until the end of September, with tours running daily from 9:30am to 7:30pm (until 6:30pm in September). You'll want to book this coveted experience in advance.

Nearby Royal Sites

Windsor Castle is the nearest queen's residence to Buckingham, located just outside London. It can be visited on a quick, half-day trip from the city. And although not royal in nature, Westminster Abbey is the resting place of many English monarchs and the site of some royal family weddings (including that of Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge).
