Paris Catacombs (Catacombes de Paris)

1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Roi-Tanguy, Paris, Ile-de-France, 75014

The Basics

A Catacombs tour takes you 135 feet (20 meters) below ground to explore this subterranean world of skeletal remains. You’ll cover just under one mile (1.5 km), which takes about 45 minutes. The Catacombs of Paris aren’t usually part of standard city tours, so they’re often experienced on a standalone tour. Book a skip-the-line ticket to bypass the queue, or make your sightseeing even easier by selecting combo admission to both the Catacombs and the Eiffel Tower.

SUPERB!
So amazing! Vic was an incredible guide with her vast knowledge of history, folktales, and current events of the catacombs. She spoke brilliant English and had an answer for every question she received. 10/10 recommend!!

Skip-the-Line: Paris Catacombs Tour with VIP Access to Restricted Areas
We met our guide Vic outside and she explained everything clearly. We skipped the queue and after a short bag and Covid pass check we started the tour. There are obviously quite a few steps down initially but these are well lit and there is no rush. The tour itself was fascinating, and Vic is not only very knowledgeable but also extremely passionate. There are no questions she can’t answer and is happy to share her knowledge and experiences. Highly recommended!

Paris Catacombs Skip-The-Line Tour
Of all the sites we visited in Paris, this was my granddaughter’s favorite. So glad we were able to fit this in. She was fascinated with the headset tour.

Skip-the-Line: Paris Catacombs Tour with VIP Access to Restricted Areas
Their is a line to get in if you go individually. The benefit of a guide is you hear more and have access to a gated area of catacombs that others do not. The guide we had was Ferret and he was a good story teller and knowledge of Paris history.

Paris with Kids Custom Private Half-Day Tour
Walid did a wonderful job showing us the Paris we wouldn’t have seen on our own. He was flexible, patient and helpful in getting us the pictures we wanted and even pick up speciality gifts along the way. Great tour! There is so much to see but I recommend the half day for parents of your teens and children and the whole day for anybody else that wants more time and information! It was wonderful!

Paris Catacombs Skip-The-Line Tour
This tour was well worth the steps. it was a little hotter under ground than i expected it to be possible because of the time of year vs. the last time i did a catacomb tour.

Small Group Paris Catacombs Special Access Tour
Kaitlyn was extraordinary! The entire experience was outstanding. Our Uber was late due to traffic. Our names were left at the entrance and the staff lead us to Kaitlyn without missing a thing. Kaitlyn was entertaining, knowledgeable and so personable. We enjoyed the history and the experience of being able to see areas not open to the general public. A must for the Itinerary while visiting Paris!

Skip the Line: Catacombs of Paris Ticket and Audio-Guide
This was an audio guided tour which was well worth it!. The narrow tunnels weren’t over crowded and there were staff at intervals throughout the tour. I am 5‘10“ and did have to duck my head in a couple sections because of low ceiling. The Information in the Audio Guide was well put together. When the tour is over and you come back above ground, you are about 1.5km away from where you started. It was a great tour with some really good history!

Excellent tour and worth the price. I was able to snag a last minute ticket, but recommend booking in advance even if you have to plan your trip around it.

Paris Catacombs Skip-The-Line Tickets With Options Guide
If you would like to have an one-of-a-kind experience, then I would absolutely recommend visiting the catacombs! The audio guide was very informative and easy to follow. It also helped set the creepy mood!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Buy a ticket in advance to avoid waiting in a long line; visitors are limited to 200 at a time.

  • You may want to bring a layer, as the temperature is 57° F (14° C) in the Catacombs.

  • There is no cloakroom, so bring only what you want to carry with you.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes—you’ll go down 130 steps and up 83 steps to return to street level.

  • The Catacombs tour is not for everyone—you will be underground and see human bones, so it's not recommended for those with sensitive disposition or young children. And unfortunately, the site is not accessible for those with limited mobility or recommended for those with heart or respiratory problems.

When to Get There

The Catacombs are open every day except Mondays and some bank holidays. The experience is the same by day and in the evening, as you’re underground and the lighting is artificial. For fewer crowds, book a morning visit.

Other Things to Do in the 14th Arrondissement

This section of Paris is not the city’s most visited, as it’s away from the Seine near the southern edge of the city limits. If you’re making the trip to visit the Catacombs, take advantage of being in the 14th to check out other attractions such as the 56th-floor observation deck of Tour Montparnasse or Montparnasse Cemetery, where writers and intellectuals such as Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Simone de Beauvoir are buried.
