The former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots, the castle showcases fine architecture and furnishings, which you’re welcome to view with an optional tour (own expense). 

Afterwards, head into the wild country, passing Doune Castle and Callander en route to Trossachs National Park. As your coach travels through rolling hills and green pastures, your expert guide shares fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like William Wallace, Rob Roy MacGregor, and the illustrious Robin Hood.

Great tour! Every stop, including lunch, was an experience. At Sterling Castle was an opportunity to take a free guided tour, but that tour moved a bit slow. They also have audio tours on smartphones. I went on my own and was able to go over every corner just by the end of our time at the castle. Lunch was in a small picturesque village. Try steak and haggis pie. Loch Lomond is nice, there's a trail going around the lake. You shiver looking at people in wetsuits swimming in the lake. The distillery was very informative, be ready to climb some stars. There is potential for a headache should you try too much whiskey. Our tour guide, Jeff from Rabbies was one of the best guides in my experience. Very informative, funny and entertaining. Overall, five star tour.

Not for those who don't speak English

I travelled with 3 friends who did not speak English. Nowhere on the trip was any provision made for them. They did not want to visit the distillery, because they felt that they would not understand the tour, but they were not given the option to do anything but visit the distillery shop, for an hour and a half. There was not even a café to sit in on a wet afternoon. Luckily one of the shop attendants took pity on them, and found them somewhere to sit. I would not recommend this trip to non English speakers.

The distillery we visit on this tour is remote, so the alternative for those not interested would be a walk in the distillery grounds or hills just behind. It's unfortunate that the weather made this an unappealing prospect and we're sorry that your friends didn't enjoy the experience.
