Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from mid-November to March. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.
Duration: 2 hours

Worthwhile trip

We really enjoyed our visit to Pompeii. Our guides Angela and George were very knowledgeable and very friendly. The Amalfi coast was beautiful however there wasn’t much to see or do in the down that we stopped in for two hours

Pompeii

Even on a rainy day, we enjoyed the trip. Pompeii and the guide at the ruins were very interesting. When we had a road block, Federico, our guide, and Antonio, our driver were very resourceful and Federico rearranged a trip to Sorento with lunch reservations at a great place.

Needed a tour guide inside Pompeii
Kay_G

Overall, the tour, guide and bus driver were very good. However, I had called Viator to "make sure" we had a guide meeting us at Pompeii who would give us a guided tour inside once we were there. I was told "yes", but that's not what happened. As we were on our way, the guide on the bus told us things we should see, but there was no guide or map provided. All the signs inside Pompeii are in Italian. We wasted a lot of time looking for things I had seen on my tour here 5 years ago that I now wanted to show my son - and we never did find them. Workers inside were not helpful, and language was a barrier. Still, I would highly recommend going to Pompeii. Just get a guide book in English, with a map, before you go! Vesuvius was magnificent, and my son enjoyed his climb to the top.

Great trip and Andreas was an excellent knowledgeable guide with a good sense of humor. Bring a water bottle to Pompeii, there are plenty of free filling stations.

Disappointed after having arrived on time but left behind and company refused to refund us

We had a terrible experience with this tour company. After travelling to Italy with the purpose of seeing the ruins of Pompeii, we arrived at the departure point at the specified time of 7:30 am and there were no tour company representatives there to meet us. We rang the tour company immediately but were on hold for 20 minutes before anyone answered. When they eventually answered, they said the tour had waited until 7:30 am before they left but we know that this isn't true as we were there at that time. They told us that the check-in time was 7:15 am. The previous night I had repeatedly searched for a check in time on every email, text and ticket I received but could not find reference to it. I checked again after this incident and eventually found it in the fine print of an email, amongst Covid-19 related information, regarding social distancing, vaccinations, santisation etc. Every email, text and ticket I got said 7:30 am at the top in large writing. We were at the location on time, but the tour company had left without us. The tour company refused to refund us the €237.36 we paid, which is a very large some of money especially when we had done nothing wrong. I have to say this experience ruined the holiday for us and to say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Once in a lifetime experience
Aoife_T
, Oct 2021
From start to finish the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable. The early morning meeting was organised very well and the guide and driver left on bang on time. The guide (who's name I can't remember!) Was very attentive and did her best to keep us occupied on the long journey. She had great knowledge of the history of Pompeii and all the surrounding areas along the way, and was definitely a big part of our enjoyment on this tour. Pompeii itself is beautiful and a lot bigger than we expected. It was suggested to divide the three hours at Pompeii into two, two and half for exploring the site, and the rest for lunch. Would really recommend the audio guides for Pompeii. Vesuvius was just as beautiful. Overall this was an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone as once in a lifetime, and this company is the way to go! We went on Thursday (28/10/21) with the driver Andrea and the amazing tour guide who's name I wish I could remember!

Pompeii is great but it should include more extras

Let me start with saying that Pompeii is an absolute must to see! It was absolutely breathtaking to walk those streets and exploring the ancient city. However! for this price they should at least include a lunch OR an audioguide to Pompeii! We had to purchase audioguides, the company doesn't provide a guided tour there. And it was very expensive to eat there! There is also not enough time in Pompeii! They give you 3 hours including lunch and we had to choose between seeing the amphitheater or the forum and other buildings and we were disappointed we couldn't complete the audiotour (which we paid for separately!). They also took us all the way up the mountain only to discover the hike was closed due to strong winds so we had to turn around and go to Naples instead which was an absolute waste of time. We got stuck in awful traffic and Naples itself isn't worth seeing. Dirty and run down, we should've just gone back to Rome. In all fairness, they did refund the tickets to the Vesuvius but there was a lot of wasted time driving around and we would've preferred just more time in Pompeii.

Waste of your time and money

This trip is definitely not worth the price. Bus was so old and dirty and very uncomfortable, which is not ok for a 3.5 hours drive in one direction. Visit to Pompeii went fine and everything was as planed, but when we were about to climbe the mountain to see Vesuvius the tour guide started to make excuses why we won’t be able to see the volcano crater as we should but she said that they had the alternative for us. When we came at the top they didn’t give us tickets for the national park and some guy took our group in the opposite direction of the main entrance to the national park. After that we walked for 1.5 km and to our surprise the guy told in the middle of nowhere that the tour is over and that we can go back. My boyfriend and I were very dissappointes as we didn’t see the volcano or the Vesvius crater and that was a main reason for us to buy this trip. Tour guide didn’t even appologize to us or offered us a refund as we didn’t even enter the national park Vesuvius. Since this trip is very pricey, I suggest you to organize it on your own. And also, the driver and tour guide were talking loudly to each other 85% of the drive, which I find very rude and unprofessional.
