Itinerary
Stop At:
Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini
Escape the noise and heat of Rome as you explore its cryptic past on the city’s longest running crypts and catacombs tour. Beat the heat with air-conditioned travel and Skip-the-Line access directly down into cool, shadowed spaces that hide layer upon layer of history. First, you’ll visit the hallowed catacombs where, beneath their persecutors’ feet, early Christians practiced their forbidden faith. Almost 2,000 years ago, this secret network of tunnels doubled as a place of worship and burial ground. As you explore tombs carved out of solid rock, your guide – a local, expert English-speaker – will relate the fascinating history of this sacred spot.
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Stop At:
San Martino ai Monti
When you exit the catacombs, your bus will take you back within the city walls to the Basilica of San Martino ai Monti. Near the edge of the Parco del Colle Oppio, this unassuming church dates back to the 4th century - it has been rebuilt over the years, but is filled with a great sense of history just waiting to be discovered. Stunning frescoes adorn the walls, from artists such as Pietro Testa, Matteo Riccione and Giannangiolo Canini.
Duration: 40 minutes
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Museum and Crypt of Capuchins
Your final destination is the Capuchin Crypt. Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate this somber space in intricate floor-to-ceiling designs, lending it the macabre nickname of ‘the Bone Chapel’. Your guide will tell you the theories, but it’s up to you to draw your own conclusions about the meaning of the crypt’s robed skeletons and vertebrae chandeliers. Open your eyes to the city’s hidden side – and you’ll never see Rome the same way again.

Not for the faint of heart or children

While this is called a small group walking tour, you are divided into smaller groups from a much larger one. We started out at the Capuchin Crypt. Our tour guide Barbara was excellent. There are 3 rooms of human remains arranged into lamps, hour glasses, chandeliers and monks. Some still have skin on them. It was disturbing for some on the tour. I wouldn’t bring a child. Our group then met several other groups and we boarded an air conditioned bus to the catacombs. The bones have all been removed from the catacombs. You only see the tunnels and where the bodies had been laid. Still interesting. Barbara was knowledgeable and friendly. She even helped us find a wonderful restaurant nearby for dinner!

This was an amazing experience. Our guide Francesca was very knowledgeable. I would recommend it to anyone. The Roman Catacombs are quite different than Paris. Worth the day if you have time and enjoy these things

This was a great tour. I was worried that my wife and 10-year old daughter wouldn't be into it, but they really enjoyed as well. Just amazing to see and hear on all the history of Rome, in which this was a part of it. In addition, during our bus rides, the tour guide provided us a lot more useful historic information on Rome, with some key sights.

It is actually 3 great tours combined in one. Our guide Giulietta made this an experience to remember. An incredible wealth of knowledge og absolutely everything we saw. We could have spent days more with just listening to her 😊 By far the best experience we’ve had so far.

Nice tour. Very informative. Our tour guide, Andre, was really knowledgeable and kind. He brought history to life. Through the tour, I could hear his passion and love of Rome. The only strange part is that we were called Barbarians a few times…it was said in jest but repeated a few times.

This experience was very different from the normal tours of museums and historical buildings. The tour guide, Angela, was extremely knowledgeable and gave a lot of information on religious burial traditions and religious history in general. The tour bus with air conditioning was extremely convenient and clean and made the tour all that much more enjoyable.

Fantastic tour! Easy to find location and not too much walking outside. Of course it’s a bummer that we weren’t allowed to take photos since both places were holy places, I will respect that. Tour guide Franchesca was really great and informative!

Great information and well thought out, group size was small which was great. We didn’t unfortunately get to the last place as there was a wedding in the venue.

The excursion never happened. My plane was delayed and I was not in Rome in time to make the tour. I have emailed Viator two times and the phones never get answered. I simply wanted to rebook but there is no contact after sale. Buyer beware! Buy your tickets on sight!!

unforgettable

Our guide Julietta was extremely knowledgeable and professional. A remarkable trip in three parts. The first part will not be to everyone's liking because of the content, and it was handled with sensitivity. The catacombs are amazing, and the guide who dealt with that part of the tour was a different guide who was also highly professional. The third part was the church trip and a voyage through the centuries back to a Roman house. Amazing trip and highly recommended.
